Many people associate the pan flute with Andean mountain music, street performers or relaxing background music. The instrument, however, carries far greater potential, reaching from light entertainment all the way to demanding classical art music, and it stirs strong feelings in listeners — from pure admiration to deep prejudice.
The pan flute is one of the oldest wind instruments known to humanity, with roots reaching back long before written history. An ancient shepherd or hunter could easily be inspired by wind whistling through a hollow tree or a reed bed, and discover that reeds cut to different lengths produce different notes. In Greek mythology, Pan, the god of the wild, made the flute from the reeds into which his fleeing love Syrinx had been transformed.
Historical and geographical evidence suggests the instrument reached Europe from the ancient cultures of Asia along the Silk Road, which carried ideas, religions and instruments as well as goods. In European history the pan flute found a strong home in Romania, where the instrument — locally called the nai — grew from a shepherd tradition into salon and entertainment orchestras and eventually became the national instrument. It began to spread more widely in the 1960s and 1970s, when international audiences discovered its pioneers.
Because the instrument is so simple in principle — a row of tubes of different lengths, closed at one end — it was developed independently in many cultures and continents, shaped by local materials, tastes and musical styles.
In terms of breathing, the pan flute resembles the Western concert flute: air flows freely and generously rather than being held back under pressure through a small reed as on the oboe. The mechanics, however, are entirely different. There are no keys or fingerings — every diatonic note has its own ready-made pipe — so the player changes notes by moving the instrument, hands and head, which demands exceptional physical precision. Semitones are produced by changing the angle of the breath and tilting the instrument against the lips, which makes complex classical scores a matter of extremely fine control.
Although the instrument long carried an "elevator music" reputation, modern players and teachers have shown that in the right hands it is well suited to the masterpieces of Bach, Mozart and Telemann. Its soft, warm and carrying sound finds ideal partners in church acoustics and alongside guitar, string quartet or harpsichord.
Traditionally the pan flute is made of bamboo. Today Stefan Stanciu performs and records exclusively on unique instruments produced with advanced 3D-printing technology. The idea came from his Taiwanese friend Tsai Hsueh Jen, known as "Arch", who originally built traditional bamboo flutes and envisioned a printed version based exactly on Stefan's long-trusted favourite instruments. After many prototypes and careful acoustic fine-tuning, a new family of instruments was born under the name STARPAN, combining STefan Stanciu, ARch and PAN flute.
The instruments are printed from PLA, a biodegradable bioplastic made from renewable resources such as corn starch or sugarcane. Its density and rigidity let the air column resonate brightly and openly, while 3D printing gives mathematically precise internal geometry and reliable intonation. Every pipe, edge and surface is then sanded and finished by hand to professional standards.
